Interview with Gavin WolpertGavin Wolpert of Singer Island, FL is a bridge professional originally from Canada who lives with his wife Jenny and their daughter. He won the Blue Ribbon Pairs in 2006 with his (then) fiancée Jenny Ryman and is a Grand Life Master with more than 11,000 masterpoints. Gavin is a familiar sight at NABCs.

How old were you when you learned to play? 7, but I didn’t really learn much then. 12 was when I really learned to play.

What drew you to learn bridge? My Mom ran free Saturday morning bridge lessons for kids.

Did your parents play? Yes

Why do you still play? It is my profession, but I continue to play because it is the best game there is and it is an endless challenge.

Have you played continuously? Yes

What is your best bridge memory? Winning the Blue Ribbons with Jenny (Gavin and Jenny were engaged at the time they won and have since married and have a beautiful baby girl – Danielle).

What do you look for in a partner and/or teammates? I look for supportive partners and teammates. People who always look for the positive vs negative outlook of how you’ve done. Also people who believe in me and expect I’ll do well.

How did you balance bridge-school-dating- other activities? I chose bridge over School.

Words of advice to young players? Listen to what everyone has to say, even if they aren’t as experienced as you. Everyone has something to offer. The most important skill in bridge is getting the best out of your partner. This is even more important than your own skill.

Any other thoughts? If you want to succeed at anything it takes work, commitment and practice.
