Stars of Tomorrowby Peggy Kaplan
Some are so tiny, they barely graze the tabletop. Others need holders to handle thirteen cards. Yet, make no mistake. Behind their small stature lies enormous interest and desire. The kids participating in the Youth NABC in New Orleans are learning, competing and delighting in the game of bridge.
Many are here to help them. Screenwriter, award-winning author, and (of course!) bridge player Louis Sachar signed copies of “The Cardturner” and chatted with players. Astronaut Greg Johnson told of his exploits in space – and at the table. The ZooMobile conducted an “Animal Olympics” and the Funny Bones Improv Comedy Group provided interactive entertainment. In addition, a generous helping of volunteers, directors and devoted parents contributed to a most successful Youth NABC.
Three days of pair and team events provided a wealth of contests. In-between games, box lunches and Bridge-ette the Alligator added to the fun.
Be sure to check out the Youth Daily Bulletins to see who won which events, along with additional honors and trophies awarded. At the end of the day, however, the love of this most fascinating mind game captures the imagination of all. Whether big or little, rest assured that tomorrow’s stars are in the making – and having a fabulous time in the process!
